Transparent icons on desktop

Hi please can somebody write me how to make the desktop
icons transparent? They've all white backround.

As Anando pointed out the 2 things to do but there is also a third for those
that have a Video card with dual monitor capabilities....turn the second
monitor activity off. If your second monitor is simply turned off, that will
not do.
