In computer terms 1K is not 1,000 bytes but 1,024 bytes. How many
pixels are there in 1 MP. Is is 1,024,000?

It depends whether you are buying or selling! Whichever gives the bigger
number when you are selling is likely to be used, so 1000 x 1000 pixels =
1MP.

For example, I have seen CF cards where "128MB" actually meant 128,000,000
bytes, or 122MB to you and I....

No, pixels aren't measured like bytes.

IMHO I wouldn't trust a "K" unless it's used specifically with computer RAM.
Today, 1K has been loosely tied to the number 1000. You will find that when
you actually investigate how many megapixels a camera has it is not exactly
defined by K, or even a million, but it's close enough. It's more like
buying a home that lists for $250K, or a car that has 100K miles on it.
Don't do the math. Just take it for what it's worth.

It should be 1024 X 1024 = 1,048,576 if computer terminology is followed. The diference
from 1,000,000 doesn't really matter in practical terms. And the number of pixels in a
digitla photo is usually a bit less than the number of individual sensors on the image
sensor. A few cameras actually interpolatre many extra pixels in the image, which many of
us regard as misleading the public about their cameras.

Not necessarily.. Hard drives use 1000 bytes to a megabyte. They've
done this for some time now. There's no reason they can't do this
with pixels.

I have no idea how they count camera pixels :-)

Not usually. Marketing types like to exagerrate as much as possible,
so you'll find that one megapixel is typically 1,000,000 pixels.
Maybe even slightly less. For example: The Canon Digital Rebel takes
pictures of 6,291,456 pixels. That's advertised as being 6.3MP.

But it doesn't really matter. Even a 10% difference in the number of
pixels isn't going to have any appreciable effect on your photos. Far
more important are all of the other things that go into a camera.
