Best for your socket
Phenom 2 X6 1100T.

My advice

Go intel and get the i5 2500k. It is the best by far

What are your uses?

What aspect of your performance are you unhappy with?

Depends what your motherboard is. The BIOS will limit what you can upgrade to. You are likely to be able to upgrade to a Phenom II CPU of some sort.

The FX CPU is out of the question unless you have an AM3+ socket motherboard.

Providing the make and model of your motherboard would help others give you advice.

Any reason for AMD being your preference? As said above, we also need to know your budget.

Intel is outperforming AMD with CPUs at all price-points right now; it could be a good time to make the transition.

I suspect budget is the reason,
Have you considered overclocking to get the most from your current chip?
It would help to know why you 'need' a faster chip though, we can probably speed your system up a good deal withought spending your cash :-)

The bios version is not as important as the make and model of the motherboard, we already knew the socket :)

we know! you already said that TWICE!

now go look at:

and see that the AMD Phenom II X6 1100T is the ANSWER!

I personally agree with all of the 2500k guys own one myself and it rocks.

But I have a friend who went 1100T and he like his alot, says it tears through all of his apps.

What is your budget first, everyone has been barking a I5 or a 1100t and both are over $200 depending where you buy. I suggest that you just get a cheap Phenom 2 x4 960T or any similar model but the boost isn't going to be much over your athlon quad. A 1090T is cheaper and a wonderful upgrade over your athlon but they are not cheap either. The I5 isn't cheap, Intel is rarely cheap and when it is you will still need to purchase a new board.

Dear OP.

Maybe, just maybe, you should spent that budget to more capable and faster memory and settings and/or better GPU instead. The Athlon II X4 645 is no slouch in price-performance PoV.

Cheers.
