I am not familiar with graphic cards so I want to know if what card is compatible with my system.
CPU = AMD phenom x4 840
MoBo = EMX AMD880HD3-PRO
RAM = 4gb dd3
PSU = 800watts zumax

does an ATI radeon 5450 be compatible with my present system?

or any other suggestion or advice on what GPU would i put/use.

Have you got PCI-Express 2.1? If yes then yes it's compatible.

I believe that you have got one PCI-e slot there.
Yes, ATI 5450 is compatible with that board.
But why are you thinking of upgrading to that card? You can get a lot better one.
What is your budget though? So that we can suggest you one..!

Are you planning on gaming with this card?
If so, a higher (but not that much more expensive) card like the 5770/6770 would be better value for money.

As AMD X6850 said, you can go for 5770. Its good, and fits in your budget luckily.
