If you have your router set up that way yes if you have not put a key on it like a password then it is open to anyone in range to use it.

Do you need to use a security key when you connect directly to router?

If you're wired directly to the router and you don't need to broadcast a wireless signal, go into the router's settings and disable wi-fi. It's a reversible change if you decide to re-enable it later and at that stage, set up a security key - preferably WPA or WPA2.
