Buying a new CPU

Hi all,

This is my first post of many on this website!

Basically wanting to upgrade my CPU from a Dual Core processor to a Quad Core, What do i need to know before i buy a Quad Core processor? and will i need to buy anything?

You need to know the socket and whether or not your motherboard supports it.
Download and run Speccy then google the motherboard. The manufacturer should have a compatibility list.
Once you have the list is just a case of picking the new cpu and finding a supplier.

Make sure it's a 'proper' quad core and not a dual core with hyper-threading.

How much is your budget? If your budget would be enough, it might be better to buy a new cpu/mobo (in case you have older socket which means limited and not the best upgrade).

Make sure your motherboard supports the processor, by checking what socket your motherboard is.

Core 2 Quad processors are the LGA 775 Socket processors.
Also make sure that your motherboard can support your processors power.


For an example:
If it can support Processors in the 775 Socket up to 95w

and It would be a 120w CPU
then it wouldn't support it.

It is very hard to get your hands on a core 2 quad these days.

Please give the exact brand & model of your PC components:
1. motherboard
2. processor
3. Video card & monitor resolution
4. RAM ( how many stick & how many GB )
It will allow us to help you better.
If you do not know, download & install CPU-Z. It will tell you all that I asked above (except monitor resolution which you can find under Windows.

Hi guys i had a look inside my computer and just wanting to know what the block is on top of the CPU chip does that come with the processor? if i buy from new?, Sorry bit of a noob with mothboard things!

Typically if.you buy a cpu it.comes.with.that block heatsink that helps dissapate heat away from the cpu

That's great i will buy a Intel cpu brand new so it comes with this.

Hi,

Not only Intel CPU's come with the block heatsinks. But AMD does aswell, and most processors these days come with it, but the 2011 socket does not provide stock heatsinks with them.
