This is my story.

I built a budget gaming PC a couple years ago and it has served me well so far. I recently bought Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad. I really liked the first one and I want to play this one too. Unfortunately I can't get over 10-15 FPS no matter what I do. I also have been playing Arma 2 for a while and I can't seem to get over 15-20 FPS no matter what I do. I have tried every graphics setting, config tweak, and hardware tweak possible but I can't remedy the issue.

I know that both of these games are very CPU intensive so I just upgraded from an Athlon X2 dual-core clocked at 2.4Ghz to a Phenom II 980 quad-core Deneb clocked at 3.7Ghz. There was no change in FPS or performance. I have an Asus M2N-SLI motherboard and I flashed my bios to 5001 in order to use the CPU in my motherboard. At first I had some issues getting the core frequency to read more than 800Mhz. I read some forums and eventually set the multiplier in the BIOS to 18.5x. Control Panel (System), NVidia Control Panel, and canirunit.com are all showing the core frequency at 3.7Ghz. Cpu-Z is still showing it at 804Mhz. I also do not have an option in Cpu-Z to select multiple processors in the drop-down menu as it is grayed out.

I don't have any AMD BIOS settings on such as Cool/Quiet anything like that. Everything else in the BIOS is default except for the multiplier which is set to 18.5x. I have tried running Prime95 with Cpu-Z up and there is no change in the core frequency, it just stays around 804Mhz.

I posted a layman's version of this on the Tripwire Interactive forums and got flamed and called a troll. Also please don't suggest that I buy new hardware because for one I can't afford it, and two according to http://www.canirunit.com I should be able to run both games outstandingly.

Here is my 64 bit DxDiag.

Was the CPU utilization very high and that's why you upgraded it? Are you sure that the GPU isn't the bottleneck?

My computer well meets the recommended requirements for the game, there shouldn't be a "bottleneck." I could run any other game on the market well before I got this new processor.

I'm pretty sure sat at 804 MHZ is cool and quiet on (mine sits just above that mark with cool and quiet on). It shouldnt make a difference under load anyway as the CPU will speed itself up.

I think he is right. That CPU should walk over those games and You have enough RAM for them.

Requirements often mean nothing. I gave my father an old PC of mine that meets the requirements for BF3 however I can say for a fact should i have tried to run BF3 on it it would have ground down to a horrible halt as the GPU wouldnt have met the task despite being within requirements.

Red Orchestra 2 is based on the Unreal Engine, it makes good use of quad cores and isn't very graphically demanding, his system should be able to run the game just fine.

It might be listed in that wall of information you provided but I didn't notice it, what motherboard are you using? If you don't know the make/model google and download cpuz it's free.

My current assumption is that your motherboard doesn't properly support the processor, or simply needs to have the BIOS updated, it's common for Phenom II to get stuck at 800mhz when needing a BIOS update.

I have an M2N-SLI motherboard. It was actually running at 3.7Ghz the whole time, Cpu-Z was just reporting 1 of the cores. Noobie mistake on my part apparently you have to right click on the interface for it to show different cores. I will show you here. But he's right, I should be able to walk all over these games.

I would appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thank you.

Phenom IIX4 945 will work on your board..
March 8, 2012 12:42:51 AM

Lol. The processor is obviously working correctly or it wouldn't even POST, but that's ok. Besides there are accounts of people on the M2N-SLI forums running 980's perfectly despite ASUS not "officially" supporting it.

I Still think your Low FPS is the GPU. If you read the requirments you posted 260 is its base recomendation. Again I example BF3 (as the box is next to me) It says you can run it on a 512MB 8800GT but i can promise on that card it wont get many FPS. Your 260 may make the requirements BUT it doesnt say how many FPS you will get at that baseline requirement but one should assume if you have the bare minimum to run the game you will get the bare minimum stable frame rate from it.

You can insist its not your hardware all you want and demand solutions that dont involve hardware replacement but I'm fairly sure the cold hard truth is its your Graphics Card.

It's not the minimum requirements that I meet it's the recommended and I exceed them except for the graphics card which I meet.

Well heres a guy with a better graphics card than you having problems with the same game

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/326114-15-engine-or...

And if you bother to listen to what I am trying to help you with. I LOOK on the BF3 Box. Recommended requirements 512MB 8800GT now anyone that plays BF3 can tell you that a 512MB 8800GT is going to grind painfully through that game. Most games are the same. The fact a 260 is the lowest card on the recommended settings simply means with that card you can get a playable frame rate. Now the makers definition of playable is designed to shift units of the game. If they told you "to get above 55FPS on maxed out settings you need a 560ti (or whatever) they wouldnt sell many copies!

The fact the CPU change has showed in your own words "no change in performance" despite being a vastly better CPU than your original means the finger is left pointing squarely at your GPU. The games may be CPU intensive but that doent mean they ignore the GPU.

Also I'm pretty sure there was never a 2.6GB 260 card so that can you run it page is talking crap too you.

Is yours running at 800 MHz all the time or only when idle? If it runs at 800 MHz while executing Prime95, then you need to fix that issue. It should jump to 3.7 GHz whenever the CPU is busy enough.

Edit: You should read this thread as it clearly explains why the CPU runs at 800 MHz: http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=655...

I already said that it's running at 3.7 now that I set the multiplier manually. Cpu-z was only reporting one core at a time that's why I thought it was tunning at 800. Control panel/system, Cpu-z, nvtools and speccy all report 3.7ghz.
