Hello!
I'm looking forward to DICE's New game BF3 and also The Elders Scrolls: Skyrim.
I have a Packard Bell ixtreme and it has a pretty bad graphics card (I downloaded the BETA and had to run it on low settings). I am thinking of spending about £100 in total. There is a graphics card that looks good and i would like conformation if it it good enough to play BF3 on high settings.
Also this is my first modification and if possible would like step by step instructions on what to do.
This is the GPU: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX...

These are my system specifications:

It's only 768mb. I think it will play BF3 on medium settings at best.
October 8, 2011 5:55:31 PM

oh,
Can you suggest a alternative?
Thanks

The 1GB version might be enough. However, you're probably going to have to upgrade your PSU, too. So 100 pounds won't be enough if you want to play it at high settings. And if you need a guide on replacing your GPU, search on youtube.
October 8, 2011 6:02:10 PM

I think i can go over 100 pounds but how much over?

October 8, 2011 6:02:33 PM

Not for 100 pound. And indeed, for a high end card you need at least a 500W psu.

Good card and good psu ; round 180 pound.

Might just get it for my PS3 what do you think?

The GTX460 and a decent 16 x 10 monitor would be a better investment than anything to do with a PS3!

Thats up to you, it would be cheaper yeah.

This is the cheapest upgrade i think ( got it from my dear friend Yummerzzzzzzzz ) ;

Are you in or near Stratford E.15? If so have you tried the computer fair that's held there?
October 8, 2011 6:25:53 PM

About 3 hours away.

Ha, that one is even cheaper !
My links don't work i see now. They are from Aria.
Have too look into your case, be back.

Oh, it's just that the google page you linked to had Stratford as the location. You're not out near Stratford-Upon-Avon are you? As that would explain the three hour trip!

It should fit. Been looking for 20 minutes but can't find the specs from your pc. ( not if it has a pcie slot anyway )
I did read on Tom's someone has put a gtx460 in it so it has a pciex16 slot. Not sure tho if it's a 1.0 or 2.0. The 6870 could give a problem if it is a 1.0 slot, because some 2.1 gpu's don't work on a 1.0 slot.
If you can find out it's a 2.0 slot go for the 6870, if not ; maybe better to be sure and go for a GTX 460 1G.

how do I find out?

Hover your cursor over the 'Bus Interface' box for a sec and an info bubble should pop up, what does it say?
October 8, 2011 7:28:42 PM

where abouts is that?
October 8, 2011 7:28:56 PM

Ignore that comment

PCI express x16 v1.1

Than the 6870 could give a problem. I don't know. Safer to go for Nvidea maybe. ( 2.0 gpu's will work in a 1.1 slot, 2.1 don't allways)
Maybe MouseMonkey ( or anyone else ) knows ?

Well I've seen GTX560Ti's listed as 2.1 cards on some sites but on the Nvidia site they are listed as 2.0 cards and whilst I'm not suggesting that he OP get a GTX560 I'd just like to point out that just because it's listed as a 2.1 card that doesn't mean that it is a 2.1 card simply because the 2.1 PCIe specification does not officially exist.

Right. So the 6870 will work then ?

It should but that doesn't mean that it will.
a b Î Nvidia
October 8, 2011 8:22:32 PM

Yeah, well, that's helpfull
So, NVidea safer or the same risk ?
October 8, 2011 8:27:20 PM

A GTX 550 Ti 1GB is £103(4?) from Aria.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

October 8, 2011 8:28:37 PM

Not complete sure, but isn't a 460 faster for gaming ?
October 8, 2011 8:30:34 PM

Yeah, even the GTX 460 768Mb is faster, by quite a bit.

Same risk basically.

I would shell out for a gtx 460 and be done with it beyond that just be sure to keep it cool as well keep it clean then all should be well.
October 9, 2011 10:25:04 AM

If I took a picture of the inside of the machine would you be able to tell me if it fitted?

Still been thinking about this, don't get it.
MOUSEMONKEY, you state that it's never sure that a 2.0 card will work for certain in a 1.0 slot ?
I like to believe you, you didn't become moderator for nothing but are all those other people, who say the pcie slots are backwards compatible and will work for sure, wrong then ?
Your credo is make my day, well it's you against more than a dozen others

@semaj ; don't know about Palit, it looks flimsy anyway. It is a nice short one tho, so it will fit probably. A picture would help. I think one like your first link was better except for the 768mb.
Maybe this one with 10 year warrenty ; http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX...

That's exactly it, they should be compatible and the card should just work but some people have problems and somehow it has come down to being blamed on this 2.1 spec and if you go to the PCIe site (which I'm not going to provide a link for, you can do your own legwork on that) you will find all the tech specs for PCIe 1.0, 1.0a, 1.1, 2.0 and the new 3.0 but there is no mention of PCIe 2.1.

Ok then. Interesting. Thanks for info.

@Semaj ; superclocked means it's factory overclocked. So with warrenty.

Seen the pic. Not much space there. I'm afraid the black cable is in the way. Maybe you can bend it over a bit and slide the gpu alongside but it's really hard to tell if it is possible. The Palit is smaller but still so big it will touch.
I might not be possible to upgrade with a newer ( bigger ) card.
a b Î Nvidia
October 9, 2011 7:52:23 PM

I really think a big card wouldn't fit because of the black cable. It uses the space of two slots, so the pcie and the one beneath that and shortly after that is the cable. You'll need a very short or flatter card. I don't know much about those. I'll try to find one tomorrow.
Maybe you can measure the card which your using now. My gpu is about 3,5 cm in height. If yours is at least 3cm you'll be ok otherwise it won't fit.

That could be replaced with a right angled SATA cable allowing the card to go over the top of it. ;)

I'm thinking of selling this computer and buying a custom rig.

Ah, that would be helpfull indeed.
Wish i new that possibility before, have been staring and measuring at that picture for at least 5 minutes, got me all wrinckeld up :??:

A whole new system would be great to offcousre. Why not ? :D

Only know something of gpu's and a little bit of mobo's so can't say much about the rest of your new system.
I would go for the 560TI though. Maybe take 6GB ram and use that money for the Ti version.
