I have an AsRock 970 extreme3 and the 4+1 phase is just not cutting it for me with overclocking and I'd like to upgrade to 990fx.

I need something with 8+2 power phase or greater and something with good vrm cooling.

Any suggestions will help out a lot, thanks!

I like the Gigabyte boards, I have to admit though that I have no idea what 4+1 phase and 8+2 phase is.

To my understanding, higher power phase may improve efficiency, stability, heat generation and power consumption but might not necessarily give out more current. Great for overclocking especially.

I'm still new to this but I learn as I go:)

Does anyone else have any recommendations?

If you can upgrade to 990fx then do it. You will get improve overclocking efficiency as 990 is better than 970 and supports 5.2GT/s where 970 supports upto 4.8GT/s.

But the best suggesting is, if you are gaming, then go for intel cpu like i5-3570k, if you can. AMD is no match for intel. Most games will bottleneck with amd cpu. i5 setup will cost you same as AMD fx-8350 setup.

Thanks for the offer on Intel. I've thought about it but I just recently received an 8320 from a friend as a gift and upgrading to a 990 would be cheapest and easiest way to go for me. If I hadn't acquired the 8320, I would have gone 3570k + Z77.

And so far, I'm not bottlenecking at all. But higher clocks and performance would obviously be nice with a better board.

Then its good to go with AMD as you got a 8350 as gift. Get a 990 chip mobo and overclock as much as you can to get better fps in games. There will be bottleneck in some games. Also get a good cpu cooler like cm hyper 212+ for oc.

Okay, thanks!:)  I have the 212 evo but it's not enough for Vishera since it runs way too hot so I'm thinking of creating a custom loop for cooling.
