avi to dvd

i have a number of .avi format video files which i want to watch on a uk dvd player, could anyone please suggest how i can do this.
Is there any free software which can convert the files? If so what format should i convert them to.
I have a Panasonic Hard Disk DVD player.

Use DVD FLick as JDFan suggests ^^^ +1- great results, better than most paid that I have tried.
Use this free one and make sure that u use 2pass convert.

Its simple but produces great results! And, u don't have to pay for it.
