Well, what do you mean by "Cant play games"? Help us out here, you need to be more specific.

PSU, CPU, RAM, we need specs. When you say you can't play games, what do you mean? a HD5450 is not a gaming card either. Far from it to be exact.

not really... if you are wondering why your pc cant play games and it lags alot and the games run like crap... its your graphics card. the 5450 is somethign used more for HD playback and not for real gaming. When you upgrade that card, you may need to upgrade your power supply as well

Yeah, that does help. Your specs are good for some games. What games do you play, and what happens when you played them? The retailer didn't tell the truth, a hd5450 is better than integrated graphics, but not a gaming card at all.

what is your budget? you definitely need a new graphics card, and most likely power supply.

I would encourage you to look into a hd6850 or GTX 460 1gb.

I would upgrade it to a 6790 minimum.
If you have some cash a GTX 560ti or 6950 is a great option.

Did you check out his CPU, he would get bottlenecks. hd6850 or GTX 460 1gb is still going to give him small bottlenecks. 2.3ghz ain't much bro.

No problem! What PSU do you have? (power supply unit) How much money do you have to spend?

He has a C2Q that can reach 3.0ghz pretty easily.

An OEM machine doesn't OC.

In your case. Open the case, and then look at what has all of the cords coming from it. Look at the 12v rails. Tell us what they are.

With software and depending on motherboard it is possible to oc the cpu.
However as you are at 2.3ghz and have 4 cores the limit would be a 6870 IMO.

Hm, I guess that could work. Also, I don't believe those games support more than 2 threads. 4 cores won't be used.

I am not 100% sure because my pc's are all custom built by me, but i am sure i have heard of oem boards been able to oc.

Well, I have never heard of that, so I wouldn't trust it. If you had done, that would be different. ;)

Overhead...
Plus if he can oc he will need a good 500 watt and a decent gpu ;)

Well, if his system peaks at 300w, he adds another 50w for OC (max), then he would be just fine. 430w corsair would do that.

I was thinking along the lines of higher oc (3GHZ) =handle bigger card ;)

Well, I was saying even with a bigger card, it would peak at 300w. 110w pull from a hd6850, 150w pull from an OC CPU, (maybe 175w), plus the rest of his system would be around 330-340w

ima +1 the corsair 500w, but honestly for his system a 6790 would be great for the games he wants to play and balance his system well, esp because he doesnt have the ability to OC.

Well, the hd5450 is 2 generations better than the hd3450. Notice, hd3450 and hd5450. They are each 450 series, just one is a hd3450 and one is a hd5450. That is how AMD works, the 1000 part is the generation, and the next three digits tell the performance of the card basically. Until the 6 series, performance kept improving, but then they changed. But that way to find out how much performance the card will have and the generation still stands.
