hey. i have a msi msi g31tm-p21 mother board. i am looking to upgrade my processor from the core 2 duo e6750 i have now. i am really intrigued by the core 2 extreme processors. on the cpu list for my processor, it only includes on core 2 extreme, and that is one of the dual core models. since my motherboard has the right buss speed and socket for a quad core version, would it work? are the ones on the list just the tested ones? what do u guys think?

thx

Solution

his motherboard has limitations so it wont run cpus that have a higher than 95w TDP

thx for the answers guys, but no has answered my question yet. can my mobo run a core 2 extreme?
only the under 95w models which happens to be the x6800, the quad core extreme models have a higher 130w TDP, but why invest on a core 2 extreme, they are only core 2 duo/quads...

not rly one in particular. i have a nvidia 450 gts and my current cpu is bottlenecking it. i want to get the fastest cpu i can for arround $100-$130 (used). thought the extreme quad cores would be better for gaming than the core 2 quads, but i could be wrong. i will also be overclocking. but will my mobo run them? ir can it ONLY run the ones on the cpu list?

thx for ur help

This will work

To be honest with you, it's time to upgrade out of that socket type so you can get the new and faster cpu's.

G31 can run any S775 CPU out. Make sure you have the latest bios but its not like a 680i that can only run the 65nm quads.

Seeing as I answered your question, please listen to the rest of what I write. It's pointless to spend $130 on a CPU for that system. You could get a used 2400 for that. Stay with what you have and save that $130 for your new system. Trust us.

thx man. good answer :). my mobo only supports atomatic overclocking, so i could do anything with the multiplyer anyway. i didn't know that that was the only difference. i will consider saving for a motherboard/cpu combo since everyone thinks i should :D
