3 Monitor setup - do I need 2 identical graphics cards

Hello,

I'm planning a 3 monitor setup - 1 30" Dell in the middle and 2 1600x1200 monitors, vertical, 1 on each side. I know I need to 2 cards. I have an NVDIA GTX 275.
- Do I need to get another 275 or can it be a newer card?
- Am I correct in saying I don't want SLI with this (the MB came with crossfire stuff).

Thanks in advance

I believe you will need another GTX 275. As for SLi, you should probably buy an SLi bridge to run it. You might run out of vRAM too, what games are you playing? If I were you, I would grab two GTX 560s if you could, even two GTX 460 1gb.

Thanks for the reply. I should have update this earlier.

I got my hands on a second video card and got a chance to test this out. I tested this with Windows 7 and two different video cards - works great. Windows 7 took care of downloading the necessary drivers. I have the original GTX 275, and added a GTX 460.

This actually wouldn't work with SLI for me since I need four outputs one each for the two smaller monitors and two for the big one.

So you put a GTX 460 and GTX 275 together and ran 3 monitors? SWEET! You couldn't SLi 'em though. Is that what you are telling me?

My understanding with SLI is that you twice the power, but not twice the outputs. With SLI I wouldn't be able to use all 4 outputs. With the two-independent cards setup I can use all 4 outputs.

Oh, yes. That is true. Now you can use Nvidia surround and use 3 monitors and SLi with modern cards.
