everytime i try to put a comment on the site in relation to an article it has the message in the left of the status bar at the bottom, "javascript (0) void" and therefore the button doesnt work. i even went and installed java to see if that would help. i changed security settings. why doesnt this work?

JavaScript, not Java. Too totally different and unrelated things ;) In this case it's not an error, it's part of the functionality. As described on the linked page, it is useful when client-side processing is needed instead of simply reloading the page. In this case the comment needs to be uploaded to the server. Still, a simple <input type="submit" ....> would have been more browser cross-compatible than custom functions.

Oddly enough the forum uses something different for submitting posts.
