PCIE 2.1 card on a PCIE 1.0 x16 slot

DEAR GEEKs,

Can a pcie 2.1 card run on a pcie 1.0x16 motherboard. I have a Asus p5sd2-vm .I have been reading that pcie 2.1 cards dont work on pcie 1.0 x16 slot. I AM an amd fan but all amd cards are pcie 2.1 .Should i go for NVIDIA cause all of its cards are pcie 2.0

Well 2.1 is really just. 2.0, so it can work? I'm sure that it will but you might get some issue with performance. Not the best person on different types of Bus though.

it will work, each and every version of pci-e is backwards compatible.
2.1 is just 2.0 with some of the management systems meant for pci-e 3.0. in other words its a go between.

There have been compatibilty issues with inserting a PCI-e 2.1 card into a PCI-e 1.x slot. However, those issues seem to be in the minority. I believe it has to do with how PCI-e 1.x was implemented on specific motherboard models.
