Random Booting Problem

I recently built my own system.

I have my OS installed on a Crucial M4 64GB SSD.

Sometimes, when I start my computer I'll be confronted with "A recent Software or Hardware Change is preventing the the system from booting. Start Windows Normally or Start-up Repair" notification.

If I hit "Start Windows Normally" my system restarts. Funny thing is, if I do this around three times (pretty much always on the third time), the OS eventually boots up! To make this even weirder, this'll happen sometimes. Most times, Windows 7 loads up just fine without any issues. This is getting really annoying though, and I'd like to know what's causing this seemingly random issue.

I'll try to provide as much relevant info as possible:

- Using Windows 7 SP1 64-bit OEM
- My Motherboard is an ASUS P8Z77 V-LK
- My SSD (on which I have my OS installed) is a Crucial M4 64GB
- I have three USB devices connected when I start up my desktop (M-Audio Mobile-Pre Mkii Audio interface, 2 MIDI controllers)
- Also, when I open up UEFI, my SSD is not listed in the main boot order menu. Only my optical drive and Samsung HDD are listed. Is this normal?!

If the booting issue was constant (every time I turn on, or restart my PC), I'd at least be able to tell if a specific modification, like running a clean boot or disabling my USB devices etc. had solved the issue. I've tried all of these things, thinking they actually solved the problem, only to end up staring at that same "Run Start-up repair" screen two days later.

This is driving me nuts! What could be causing this problem? Any info would be highly appreciated.

Thanks guys,

  1. Hi,
It might be a SSD issue.
You can try installing Windows on the HDD and test (just to see if it's a SSD issue or not).
Is there a firmware update available for the SSD?
What SATA port and SATA cable used for the SSD? Is SATA set to AHCI in BIOS?
