What is the point of high RAM mhz?

I thought every cycle the ram goes through is just it refreshing its memory so it doesn't lose it. So how could it effect overall system performance by it refreshing its memory at a faster frequency?

It improves performance incrementally: while almost every other component can give great performance boosts, speedier RAM willo give a small increase by the higher frequency.
