Do you really need the 3GB version?

Yes it is one of the best GTX580's you can buy.But no one really knows yet how demanding BF 3 will be.You may need a GTX580 SLI to in order to max it out to the fullest and maintain 60FPS+.

My 2 cents, I was looking for a card when the memory was increased Not worth the inflated price, look it up before you buy.

Windows 7 64 pro OEM
Samsung 12x blu-ray drive

I think thats all the necessary components you need to know?

Now im stuck between these 2 card:

The MSI runs cooler, takes less power and beats the Gigabyte in a few games.

The Gigabyte is quiter, and beats the MSI in a few games too! I also like the look of it better.

Nice set up mate, very good choice, mine is very similar.

Mate there is virtually no performance difference between them.

there is 4 fps difference between the reference GTX 580 and the Gigabyte which you are not going to able to notice.

Both the MSI and Gigabyte have good coolers so you will be able to OC either just go for the one that is cheapest and has the best warranty/RMA service in your country.

i have a msi lightning extreme gtx 580 3 gb version.everybody knows that BF3 BETA is full of bugs and all.sudden freezing on 5970 and all.i tried BETA and average fps were
55~80 i guessss.no lags and choppy gameplay.

I believe the GTX580 Lightening is the better choice.It has much cooler temps than the Gigabyte.

Stick to the MSI Lightning Extreme. It has won tons of record and is the single fastest GPU on the market.

Technically the Gigabyte SOC is faster than the MSI because of higher factory clocks but i'm sure the MSI can O.C. more because of better cooling.

Well, I just found out that the msi lightning xtreme is not available anymore in Australia!

Also I don't think it is necessarily faster then the lighting or SOC because I looked at benchmarks and the lighting xtreme loses in most games. I don't think I need the extra 1.5gb of memory.

What do I get, the $629 msi lighting or the $599 gigabyte SOC?

Your basicly paying any extra $30 for a better aftermarket cooler.Go with the Lightening.You will be able to achieve higher clocks and maintain cooler temps.

Thanks Purple Stank, you have been a great help, I will best answer you as soon as I feel it's appropriate to.

My mind is like this:
Lightnings faster but SOC looks more appealing
SOC is about the same performance but Lightings better in 60% of games
Lighting is $30 more expensive but keeps cooler
SOC, lightning, SOC, Lightning!!!

Lol.You mean aestheticly appealing? You will hardly ever look at it.It's gonna be inside your case the whole time.

Don't you think it's a little strange that a 2 fan heatsink gets cooler temps than a 3 fan heatsink?

It seems that the Lightning is able to achieve a 50mhz higher O.C. on the core clock.
