For the mild to med gamer is there any reason to use on board video? Is dedicated video ram still the man, or are systems now fast enough to provide the memory for newish (not cutting edge SLI or anything) gpus?

The new AMD A8 chips can handle WoW at good frame rates at sub 1080p. If you want anything more capable than that then you need dedicated graphics with dedicated RAM.

If you are looking for a integrated graphics solution, then AMD Llano A8 series would be the best choice. The integrated graphics core can be Crossfired with up to a Radeon HD 6670 for a little better performance. Anything more powerful than a HD 6670 will cause the integrated graphics core to shut down. Llano's CPU core is a little weaker than a Phenom II core, but is sufficient to play games.

I believe the graphics core in the Llano A8 APUs is about as powerful as the Radeon HD 5570 or HD 6570.
