Hi guys, just wanted the community to look over these parts just in case I'm missing something in my research.

My CURRENT system:

Playing sc2, bf3, d3 at 19x12 on a 28" monitor.

thank you for posting. however, i'm uninterested in what you've "heard". i've already researched and considered ivy bridge. because of the release date, the uncertain price points, and modest performance increases, i've decided to go with sandy bridge now rather than wait. the better performance you're talking about is generally considered to be for laptops and people who will be using the integrated gpu. which of course, i'm not.

please everyone, restrain yourself from posting unless you have charts, benchmarks, articles, previews, etc to back up your suggestions. i'm potentially spending hundreds of dollars here and i'm not going to do that without solid information. thanks!

You have a very nice rig right now.

What do you see as your problem?

What you are looking at is good, you will get a faster cpu, and more ram. But, will it accomplish your objective?

Most games are more limited by the graphics configuration than the cpu, and it looks like you are not considering a change to that component.

I should have mentioned in my OP that my upgrade is motivated in part by the additional benefits of the new platform, not just pure CPU performance. Also, the death the 1156 socket has left me with no easy or cheap upgrade path. While the i5-750 is ok, and has been great for me over the last couple of years, I'm definitely ready for a nice big performance bump.

At my res, my 6870s are sufficient for the time being, (bf3 everything on ultra, AA on) but you're certainly right about their overall impact on game performance. Following this platform upgrade, I'll be doing graphics and probably a new case. For the time being, my focus is on the CPU/mobo.
