Storage device for digital pictures rather than buying mul..

I'm looking for a device where you could store digital pictures rather
than having to buy a bunch of cards for the camera.

In other words, if you were traveling with your digital camera and did
not have a laptop at your disposal..... is there something on the
market that would allow you to pull off your digital photos from the
photo card in your camera? That way, you could keep using the same
photo card, dump your photos into the device each time the card is
full, and then pull the photos off the device once you return home.
That makes more sense to me than having to buy and bring along multiple
photo cards.

I contacted Olympia about a month ago, and they said they were on the
verge of introducing such an item. I just can't believe there isn't
already something like that out there.

Thanks.....
Mac

I am using an Archos Gmini 220. Its an MP3 player with Compact Flash
port. I had to upgrade the firmware for data integrity but that is all
described in the yahoo group.
Alternatively you might want to look for an "image tank".
I think the Gmini was the better choice since it also plays mp3 it did
not cost more. I am not sure if they are still selling them but I think
they do. It has a 20GB HDD. I think I payed around $200 (dont quite
remember).

There's a ton of solutions for this.

There are a number of alternatives. There are stand-alone disk drives
that will serve the purpose. Check with Google.
Personally, I would prefer the laptop. NOt as light, but has a nice big
screen to evaluate the pictures.
NOte that while they are somewhat more expensive, carrying a lot of
cards can be a more space, and weight effective choice.

Before my last vacation, I purchased enough SD cards to hold 1200
pictures from my camera. At the time, that added up to about $150
dollars worth of storage, bought on sale over about 3 months. Now, the
same storage would cost less than $50. Given the fast falling price of
flash cards, they are more cost effective at this point, and MUCH
smaller and lighter than even the stand alone disk drives.

I use an X's drive Pro 3310, 40Gig , it has readers for all the popular
formats. About US$150.

I travelled in India last February and had the same problem, but even in
smaller towns it was possible to have the pictures burnd from memory sticks
or other cards on CDs. So, no problem.

Ever heard of Apple's iPod. It has an import function for storing, in my case up
to 20 GB of pictures. If you want to spend a lot more, you will get the Photo
iPod which will also store pictures from your computer, just like a photo Album.

Of course there is, the lab I am having my photos printed
(www.photodesmos.gr) has a new Fuji ordering machine that can burn your
photos on cd, and all you need is a blank cd and 3 euros for the process!
