I'm building a PC mainly for media with the LIGHT gaming. I do a lot of video editing. Let me know if these parts are good - this is my first time! Here are the parts I have chosen; as far as I know they are all compatible. If they aren't do let me know!

I don't live in the uk, but here's my recommendation for the rest:
Case: one of the antec 300 series or Half 922 coolermaster
Power supply: antec earthwatts 650w
Hardrive: Seagate or western digital 1 tb sata 3.0
boot drive: Ocz or patriot 60-96 gb ssd with sandforce controller and sata 3.0 support

When looking at SATA II 6Gb/s (commonly referred to as SATA III or 3.0) storage, make sure that your mobo has the same controller chipset as the HDD/SSD in order to get the best performance. If not, you'll be spending on storage that may not operate to ideal specs, and end up with SATA II 3Gb/s speeds, or worse.

I too am a light gamer and video editor. The key difference between an i5 and i7 - besides the price - is that the i7 has hyperthreading. I edit 1080p video using Adobe CS5 Master Suite and have never had issues with the i5. Do you really need to spend the extra cash for the i7?

Corsair RAM has worked very nicely on my Asus P7P55D-E Pro and you're definitely gonna want at least 8 Gb of RAM. I had issues with 4Gb and went overkill with the Corsair Vengeance 4x4Gb.
No issues anymore, I'll tell you what!

Good luck!

For your GPU...get the cheapest 550Ti...extra money for Asus or other brands and their coolers is a waste of money...don't pay anything extra for preoverclocked cards either.

I made the mistake on my 1st build in 2006 as well..ever since I've gone with the basic GPU...all that extra stuff adds nothing. Now if its 5-10 pounds extra then sure...but anything more its a waste.

I'm really not good with hardware. I'm fairly decent with the software side of a PC. So picking parts for me was difficult. I was going to buy a PC from a custom built website. But I'd save a fair bit doing it myself. Is there any other big thing I need to change besides the GPU?

The 550Ti is a great card, but there are a lot of great cards. Don't necessarily limit your potentials to one card. Maybe research issues that the motherboard you're interested in has, look for frequent GPU and even RAM problems with specific hardware. This will go a long way in the end ----> this is coming from personal experience!
