Upgrade 980x?

looking to upgrade rom the 980x to the 3960x. Is there a major difference? worth the upgrade?

why do you want to upgrade? it doent worth the upgrade. stas with the i7 980x.

Depending on what you are doing. I think it was 10-20% faster on most applications. A lot off money for such a small performance boost. What is the computer used for?

Considering the $1000+ plus the new motherboard, etc. Not much incentive for you to upgrade, unless you can get a really good price selling your current unit.

And with Ivy Bridge due out in a few weeks - you'll want to make sure you move in the right direction if you do decide to make some changes.

the system is used for primarily gaming. My system was originally an alienware purchased as a gift. I use the web as well, but 99% gaming with a 6990 and 12 gigs of ram

i wouldnt upgrade that processor. i have the i7 950 and im sticking with it till haswell(4000 series) comes out. it just doesnt make sense to me to pay so much for just a 10-20% boost. now if your selling your old parts for close to what you bought them for then it makes some sense.

THG likes to suggest a worthy CPU upgrade is one that moves you up a couple tiers in that chart.

In most games you wouldn't see a major difference.
No game would run on Ultra High while the other CPU would only run on High graphics, for example.
