Yes, there are freeware programs that can do essentially the same
thing--converting various video formats to MPEG4--but if you aren't computer
savvy, Image Converter 2 is excellent for its ease of use. Simply select
the file you want to convert and click a few buttons. No need to manually
create MP_ROOT and 100MNV01 directories and such--it will create the folders
and files for you and send the MPEG4 file directly to your Memory Stick.

Ignore the troll, Irrat8ed, who gives no good reason for complaining about
the software...other than the fact that it does what it is supposed to
do--converting "his .avi home movies to show on his PSP." If he doesn't see
the point, as he says, why would he have purchased the software?

If someone wants to convert movies to a format that your PSP can read, and
do it quickly and easily, the Image Converter 2 does the job. My only
complaint is that it costs $15 or $19 to order (can't remember which), when
it really ought to have been given away with the PSP (or at least
discounted). My non-computer geek/non-gamer friends who use the PSP for
music and movies more than for games really appreciate it.

If you own a DVD of a movie and want to put it on a memory stick to
watch on your PSP, you would use this utility by itself or in
conjunction with something else? Like do you need to extract the movie
from your DVD to your PC first and then use this utility or does it do
everything for you?

Also, how compressed is the video, meaning what size mem stick would
you need for a standard two hour movie.

You would have to use Image Converter in conjunction with something else.
This software works with movies which are already in .avi, .mov, .mpeg, and
other formats, but you can't just drop a DVD into your PC and use the
software to send it to your PSP. You would first have to use something like
DVD Decrypter and Gordian Knot to rip the DVD to a format that the software
will then convert. If your goal is to covert home movies or downloaded
movie clips to MPEG4, this software is all you need. If your aim is to
convert an encrypted DVD, you obviously need to do a little more work first.

You can adjust the kbps setting, but anything longer than 2 hours is
separated into two files. I used the Image Converter software to fill up a
256MB Memory Stick Pro Duo with video clips and commercials and such (none
longer than 12 minutes). I also used the software to convert Family Guy
episodes after ripping them from a DVD, but the resulting file size was
close to 1GB because I forgot to adjust the resolution.

I'm still playing around with it, but the bottom line is that it does what
it is supposed to do--convert a variety of movie file formats into MPEG4 and
transfer the thumbnail and movie file to the appropriate memory stick
folders--quickly and easily. And although it can help with the conversion
of a DVD, once you first get it into a format it can recognize, that is not
its main purpose...and I'm sure Sony would never advertise the software as
such. I don't think we'll ever see a legitimate commercial release of "DVD
to Memory Stick" software, because that would compete with Sony's UMD format
(not to mention the copyright issues involved).
