PC shuts down randomly!

Hi,

I have a Core 2 Duo desktop. The problem is that since some time it occasionally shuts down. Some times it just shuts down. Then until I disconnect the electric power cord for some minutes it does not start. Sometimes it just shuts down and restarts automatically. Also when I start the PC the power supply fan makes a lot of noise. Therefore today I cleaned the dust inside it with a blower in the hope that my problem is solved. Also now the fan is not making any noise. But again after 2-3 hours of usage it shut down and restart automatically. Kindly inform me what the problem could be and how I could solve it. Best regards. :)

If you can answer a few questions it could help narrow the cause down.

1. is this happening when you put the PC under load from playing games, or editing software.

2. how old is your power supply unit, and its make/model.

3. have you recently added any new hardware, like video cards, hard drives or dvd/cd drives?

4. how are your temperatures? you can get a free program to monitor your hardware here: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

be sure to check all the power cables for any loose connections or any damaged cables.

also try giving the other components in your pc a cleaning and try to remove any dust from the CPU fan and GPU fan.

With the information provided, it sounds like your PSU is dying, you should be able to pick up a new one, they are generally not very expensive.

1- No. It happens anytime even when the PC is idle.

2- I bought this PC three years ago. About the PSU make/model I don't know correctly. Its 550 watts.

3- I recently got the motherboard replaced.

4- I will just post the temperatures here after installing this program.

I have checked the cables. I have just completely cleaned the PC with the blower. The PSU fan still makes noise when I start the PC. I will post the temperatures within a few minutes.

My money is on the PSU nearing the end of it's life.

A replacement PSU will cost roughly up to $60 (USD)

I hope after replacing the PSU it solves your problems.
