Hi guys.

I've been away from desktop computer parts for some years (just using laptops), and now that I got a Dell XPS 8300 for my wife, I want to be able to do some gaming on it too.

So, considering my budget, a Geforce GTX 560 Ti can be an option. But I am in doubt if my PSU will be sufficient to take care of it.

My specs:

Dell XPS 8300
i7 2600 3.4GHz
8GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz (4 x 2GB)
Blu-ray 8X Disc Combo
1TB SERIAL ATA 2, 7200 RPM
AMD Radeon HD 6450 1GB DDR3 (to be replaced)

PSU:
Dell AC460AD-00

+3.3V = 17A
+5.v = 25A
TOTAL 142W MAX

+12VA = 18A
+12VB = 16A
+12VC = 8A
TOTAL = 385W MAX

-12V = 0.3A
+5Vaux = 2A

TOTAL POWER 460W MAX

For what I see, there is one cable (yellow/black), not used yet, with 2x6pin connector on it.

Now, make me happy and say that it will work and I will play BF3 :o)

Thanks!
Doug

Well you should be able to use it. It depends on efficiency.
Guru3d for 560ti: Measured power consumption
Advertised GeForce TDP = 170W
System in IDLE = 175W
System Wattage with GPU in FULL Stress = 319W
Difference (GPU load) = 144 W
Add average IDLE wattage ~ 25W
Subjective obtained GPU power consumption = ~ 169 Watts

Anandtech for 560ti: Load Power Consumption - Furmark Total System Power in Watts: 352W
Load Power Consumption - Crysis Total System Power in Watts: 317W

But if you want a 39$ (after rebate) psu can handle this with no probs: CorsairCX500 V2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817139027

Dell PSU's are pretty good. Its a mystery who makes it for them but they are pretty good. So you should be able to use it.

Walternate is the manufacturer! xD

And about PCI-Express Connectors needed to power this card... I think I will need two 6pin. I have it, but 2 6pin connectors within just one cable, instead of two connectors on individual cables. Is that ok?

ive owned a few and read the same many times over, the general theme being that dell use good quality units, and the wattage is often underated

Yes, usually people say that is a well made PSU. My only concern now is regarding the connectors... I think my options are:

- Use the 2 x 6pin from one cable (one rail) that I have, or;
- Use only one of these connectors plus a new one made using 2 molex to 6pin adapter?

Thanks,
Doug

ive always used 2 x 6pin connector from the same rail for each card (hd 4870 / gtx 460 sli) - is that bad?

I'm not sure if it is a bad idea. It probably will depend on your rail's electric current... and in fact, I don't have 4-pin molex connectors out from my PSU... Just SATA power connectors. Thanks Dell! :(

If I connect these 2 x 6pin from the same rail and it not works, I will need to buy two adapters from SATA to MOLEX, and with them, use the MOLEX (2) to 6pin (1) adapter provided with the GeForce.

I now that seems to be an ugly approach, but is it safe?

Thanks!

Should be fine to run the 2 connectors from the same rail

Ok. I will buy a 560 Ti from Gigabyte and post here the results.

For the moment, I wish to thank you guys.

That stock power supply will be perfectly fine powering a Ti. I am running my 560 with a 430w Antec EarthWatts power supply and don't even come close to the limit. I don't even hit 300w. As for brand. Evga is the best in the business when it comes to Nvidia. I would go with them.

Just for the record, a GIGABYTE GTX 560 Ti 1GB OC (900MHz) is running really great. Just took out the Radeon 6450 and plugged the 560 GTX Ti, with the 2 x 6pin from the same rail. Perfect! I decided for Gigabyte due to its price here in Canada (CAD 204.00 + taxes, already with a rebate). Games tested: TF2 (old, I know), Dragon Age 2 and Crysis 2.

Thank you guys!

great to see it worked out for you, another win for Tom's!

if you want/need more performance you can monitor the temperatures and fan usage (noise levels) on the card and see if you can overclock some more, it should be easy with that card to reach the 950MHz or even the 1GHz mark

I have 2 x GTX 460 (Gigabyte SuperOverclock & MSI Hawk with Twin Frozr) and they can run upto 930MHz (the 460 nvidia reference is 675MHz, my cards are factory overclocked at 815MHz and 780MHz - your factory overclock is from the nvidia reference of 822MHz to 900MHz). I'd be surprised if you couldnt eek out another 6 or 12% on the core. I'd recommend using either Gigabyte OC Guru (should have come with your purchase / or you can download from Gigabyte) or the superior MSI Afterburner.

edit: I will throttle mine down to 880MHz - latest Nvidia WHQL driver appears to be crashing and recovering - certainly dont want that on the Battlefield (3). At 880MHz it is still almost 31% OC from the nvidia reference
