We have a Mac OS 10.7 Mac and whenever we try and delete a file from the desktop it asks for a password. We've changed ownership with the chown -R command but it didn't fix it and found out it could be something to do with ACLs and not permissions. Is there a way to fix this without the Mac OS install disk? We do have the install disk but can't use it because our hard drive is encrypted!

If you run Disk Utility there is an option to fix permissions.
Alternatively there is a program called Onyx that will fix permissions among other things.
