Which motherboard do i need?

Hi,
I'm building my first ever PC and the CPU I've chosen is the AMD Phenom II x4 965 (3.4ghz) AM3

Do I need a motherboard that is an AM3? Or can i use a AM3+ motherboard?

Also could someone explain the difference please

the am3+ is backwards compatible. Just make sure that the motherboard supports the Phenom II.
