I can't help with the iPad but the router needs to be connected to your telephone system or to a MODEM which is already connected. Posters will be able to help if you post which country you're in and which ISP you use for your Internet connection. I think I'd be right in saying the iPad will "see" a network once it's up and running. You'll also find it helpful to read the router's manual.
