I am thinking of buying either an xbox or playstation 2. There will not be
playing any games on line and there will be a maximum of 3 players at a
time.

Any suggestions or feedback?

Neutral post:

Buy a Gamecube and save $50 since you are not playing online. You can
then use this money towards xbox360 or PS3 (now THAT would be a fun
flame war at least for the first 2 years)

And yes, OP is 3.5 on Trollometer.

They are games. There are certain games that are only available
exclusively on one console. For example, Grand Theft Auto in the past
has been released months earlier for the PS2 than for the XBOX and PC.
Grand Turismo 4 (GT4) is a PS2 exclusive. Halo and Jade Empire are XBOX
exclusives. Hence, if you want to play those games you need to have the
specific console.

So my point is that unless there are just certain games that you need
to have and they are console exclusives, make your judgment on how good
the console is. The XBOX is far the better system and it has virtually
all the same games the PS2 has.

Why buy a car with less horsepower if they cost the same? :)

That is more or less what I said, so you aren't really disagreeing. :)

If there are certain games you just need to play and make sure you buy
the right system.

I do disagree with you on your judgement though. The only first person
shooter I have played on XBOX is Halo. Beyond that all my other games
are sport simulations, racing game, action/adventure, or role playing
games, all of which I have enjoyed tremendously. In fact, I have seen
many of the games I own on PS2 before and was amazed how much better
graphics the XBOX has. Hence, my opinion to buy an XBOX unless you wish
to play PS2 exclusives.

Design ;p, for me the PS2 controller is much more comfortable to use than
the XBOX, but that is probably just because I had a PS1 and was used to the
controller layout and also like to play my old PS1 games too.

It is all about the games, and only you can make that choice. Which
system has the games YOU want to play...or rather the most games YOU
want to play or interest YOU.

Go to a local game shop and look over some stuff try some stuff out,
etc.., etc..

Check a resource like http://www.gamerankings.com Go there and you can
sort games there by system, genre, etc.. and see which looks to have the
better ones in areas that interest YOU.

Good luck...

The controller is a factor, however I would only go to that as sort of a
tie breaker. If I couldn't decide which one for some reason then the
comfort and feel of the controller might come into play at that point.
It does matter...I wouldn't base all of it on that though. You can get
those things to use the other controller on the other system these days.

GT4 or Gran Turismo 4 is a driving sim only on ps2. Sim might be a strech
since there is no damage models, but the graphics and handling is to be seen
to be belived.

Halo is a X-Box exclusive a thrid person shooter along the lines of doom and
quake.

Both are worthy games.

I disagree. While the xbox and ps2 do sahre some games, the PS2 has many
more exclusives than the xbox.
My personal opinion is that the xbox is great if you want First person
shooters and the PS2 is great if you want 3rd person shooters. It depends
on what a persons favourite genre is.

PS2...
Much larger library of games
Slower load times
DVD playback out of the box

Xbox...
Better graphics
Faster load times
DVD playback requires extra kit

If you are into Platformer games then do not get an Xbox, they are near
non-existant on that console.
If you are into fiirst person shooters get an xbox. If you are into third
person adventures go for ps2.

GC
if you wanna play Zelda, Mario , Metroid etc.

I think all consoles are a must have, if you like good games.
On the PS2 you get Metal Gear, Final Fanatasy etc.
The Xbox gives you morelikely PC Games. And yes, Xbox has a limited
library compared to the ps2.

I think the problem of choice is a difficult one if people have no specific
choice of genre (unless platformers in which case xbox is a non starter).
The systems are very close in terms of games and I find it increasingly
difficult to advise to someone the best to buy.
Naturally the xbox has a head start in the graphics department, but not
everybody minds about having the clearest detail in a game. But the PS2 has
the advantage of having a much larger llibrary of games.
I have both of the consoles and the ps2 mostly gets my attention. The
gamecube gathers dust for that once in a year good game.
I tend to use the xbox for Live games only and leave single player games to
the ps2 - unless its an xbox exclusive like Jade Empire.

XBOX and modchip. Then you can trash your DVD, Radio, CD player etc. Its the
best mediacenter ever. The only thing thats missing is the posibility to
record tv, but ho care. And its so easy to take a backup off your games on
to the harddrive so that you can leav the gamedisc in a safe place.

for sheer volume of games the ps2 wins hands down. I have both systems
and don't play online. I just get more fun out of the games I have for
the ps2, but that really IS my opinion. The xbox is a better machine,
but I've hardly found any games i really enjoy on it... and the
gamecube we got rid of as soon as we got it.

You didn't say what sorts of games you're interested in, so it's difficult
to say which would be better.

If you like FPS & sports games, go with XBox.

If you like RPGs, go with PS2.

PS2 has a larger library of exclusive games, and a larger library overall
- especially when you consider that you can play older PS1 games on it.

Xbox has superior graphics, with many games support HDTV, or at least
480p. (only a few PS2 games have any HD support.)

Your best bet is to go to the store and see what games are available for
each system. The system with the larger number of games you're interested
in is probably the one you should buy.

You mean NATIVE games. For non-native games, I can play more games
