Hello,

Normally, when a new processor comes out - it is called a first generation processor. They usually make a "second generation" processor out of the first one they made. The second generation (depending on the type) normally has anyways from +5-15% performance difference compared to the first one. Also they normally are more power efficient as they are able to modify the "first generation" and make it better.

It really depends on which line of processors you're talking about. But in general, the second generation of a technology will be slightly faster, use a little less power, generate a little less heat and be a little (sometimes a lot) cheaper.

For instance, the Core 2 Duo E6600 debuted on the 65nm process and was clocked at 2.4 GHz, selling for around $200. It was later refreshed and built on the 45nm process clocked at 3.06 GHz, but still sold as the E6600 for $75.

With the 1st generation Intel® Core™ processors had a microarchitecture that was known as Nehalem. The release of the 2nd generation Intel Core processors gave us a totally new microarchitecture that was called Sandy Bridge. There are a number of different features from one to the other (Just like two different floor plans to a house) but in the end the 2nd generation Intel Core processors can perform around 10% to 15% faster at the same speed as the 1st generation Intel Core processors.
