I would love help on finding a new graphics card!

Like many others, I am having trouble finding a card that will work with my computer. I have searched many forum posts, and I have looked at a lot of card comparisons, but I am still having trouble.

HP Pavillion
System Model: NY544AA-ABA p6210f

This simple computer is obviously in need of an upgrade....

I would love some help with upgrading ideas for power supply, graphics, etc.

I can provide more details, but I am unsure of what exactly is needed. Thank you so much for your help and support.

I will be playing games such as portal, left for dead, WoW [ultra?], and others of that degree. In other words, I will not be needing as much demand as with other games.

Can't find out what your psu is. You know how many watts/amps it has ? ( amps from the 12V rail )

Really the only things that need an upgrade is the psu and gpu. It's a standard atx and the mobo is pcie 2.0 so pretty much every psu/gpu will work. What gpu and psu you get is entirely dependent on your budget.

Edit: the stock psu is 300w. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01...

"Combined power on +5V and +3.3V rails not exceed 175W max"
"Combined power on +12V and +5V rails not exceed 268W max"
"Continuous total dc output power shall not exceed 300W"

My screen resolution is: 1680x1050

My budget for a card would most likely be around $180, and anything else will have to be considered after seeing the product.

Thank you so much for responding, I hope this is what you are asking for..

I believe you will have something like 22A on the 12v rail, could you confirm that ?

Yup as robjordy said, a 5670/6670 is the best with the stock psu, but you could go up to a 6870 with a better psu.

You guys all are amazing! Thanks so much!

I am most likely going to upgrade my power supply, and go with the 6870. I feel like this will provide me with what I need to upgrade again in the future.

Stupid question: These will all physically fit in my case right? haha

Would anything higher than 550w be overkill if I am mostly going to be playing WoW?

If you're just now looking to upgrade an old pc then by the time you upgrade again, it would be best to just buy a whole new pc. There are many many many threads of people with that same hp case that come on here for a gpu upgrade, you can search the forum or even google. If you really want to make sure on dimensions you can, but the connections/compatibility is all standard atx and pcie 2.0 is compatible with every pcie version, so no worries there.

I was thinking something along the lines of the GTX 460.
That suggestion helps a lot.

You can tell I haven't dabbled into this kind of stuff a lot..

The EVGA looks like a way better deal

I just need to learn what all the stuff means on the titles of cards haha. It would probably help a lot....

But that is something I will have to do myself, I won't make you explain haha.

Amd has stepped up their drivers. Smoother picture?, screenshots show identical image quality and amd wins in hqv. Amd or nvidia I could care less which. The 460 rivals the 6850 which are also priced around the same. But you stated wow which every blizzard game prefers nvidia.

I never know which card is better because I don't know what they fit with.

I am for sure getting this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

So I need to know which card will work best with it. I heard the same thing about Blizzard and nvidia, so maybe I will consider one.

If you don't mind explaining, how do I know the max card I can have? And why?

I am trying my best not to make you guys do all the work for me, but if you are willing to help, I won't stop you :)

Actually, i am a jerk, only a helpfull one. That's why i'm disguised as a alien. :pt1cable:

The max card for your system would be hd6870, maybe a gtx560Ti but there will be a little bottleneck maybe with your cpu, not sure.

There's no easy way to explain cpu/gpu bottleneck, there's just way too many cpu/gpu/res/game combinations, but knowledgeable people as ourselves will know the range where a bottlenecks starts to occur. I would agree with malmental, the 6870 and 560 rival each other and are as high as I would suggest before your cpu starts to bottleneck the gpu. Tom's did a very long 4 part article about it awhile back. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/balanced-gaming-pc-...

Switching topics a bit: Tom's published a "best gpu for the money" article monthly which states different gpus at different price points and also at the end has a hierarchy chart to see how they stack up against each other. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card-...

Yeah, I feel like the extra $40 or so might be worth it for the Ti (at least the two I am looking at have that price difference).

If I go with the Ti, I wouldn't want to have bottleneck. I feel like I would be fine though.

Ah, I see. Well... I will probably not go with the Ti in this case then. I may just go with the 560, and when the time comes for a new upgrade, I will just get a whole new computer and build it myself or something. As for now, I think the 560 would do just fine, and I won't have to risk any of this stuff.

It is known that am2+ mobos can run am3 cpus but only up to the 95w versions. However, as you may know there is now a x6 95w but I can't find a definitive answer on that one.

But I don't see a point in a cpu upgrade especially since you're only getting a 560. Even if it were $50, save it for your next pc.

I just installed my fatal1ty.
It was pretty easy to install. I have never done it before, and I didn't even have to look up how to do it.

Anyways, I am a little disappointed the Ti won't work..

The GTX 560 is still a strong possibility.

By any recent nVidia, what exactly do you mean?

The 560ti will work, as well as any pcie graphics card. Which means any nvidia(or amd).

Okay I think you and mal have different opinions if I'm not mistaken?

But you say the Ti will work, as in it will work with my current athlon II x4? or do you mean it will work with my possible upgrade to the phenom?

His board is 2.0 so it shouldn't have an issue. Even some 1.0 boards can use 2.1, but 2.0 doesn't have any issues with 2.1.
