I am building this computer for my daughter who is majoring in 3D Graphics and Animation. I was told she would need at least 1GB memory dedicated for the GC. I will be installing W7(64Bit) Pro O/S. She also enjoys playing Sims 3 games and all of the expansion packs. I know her current pc (Vista Home Basic-32bit- GC--> NVidia geforce 8400 GS) is having trouble with Sims 3 Pets. After an hour, it closes the Sims 3 game. I am also thinking about adding a tv tuner card if anyone has any recommendations on one of those too.

These are the cards I have been looking at:

I would truly appreciate some feedback.

Thank you.

The Sapphire card is out of stock. Of the two XFX HD 5670s, I would select the last link since the card is $90 after rebate.

Before running out to buy Windows 7, try doing a fresh install of Vista. At worse you will waste time if the Sims 3 continues to crash after installing the new video card. At best you will save money. Addtionally, there is no real reason for most people to buy the Win 7 Pro. Win 7 Home should be fine. The Pro version has some additional features that are more useful in a business evironment than a home environment.

Sorry, but I can't recommend a TV tuner since I never owned one.

I think the money you save from getting Windows 7 Home vs Windows 7 Pro can be used to increase the RAM to 8GB which should provide better performance for 3D graphic applications since they can potentially eat up a lot of RAM.

Only the first card you linked is an HD6670. The other two are HD6770s which are much better. Here is the in stock model of the Sapphire card with free shipping and a free game;

It is what I would get.

Thank you for your response. I agree with you on the additional memory; I ordered 2(4GB) modules. I just wasn't sure if there was a big difference between a Sapphire and a XFX; or a 6670 vs a 6770.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your input. I think I am going to go with a 6770. Any opinion on a tv tuner card?

I'm not really an expert on that so perhaps someone else could chime in or start a new thread for the question.

Good choice on the 6770 - it's a gamer card whereas the 6670 is for people that just watch media and never game (the 6770 works great with media too).

I have this tuner (USB) and it's great - setup is a bit twitchy though: it's easy for over the air channels and cable, not so much with satellite.

Hauppauge is always my choice for tuners.

The main difference between the XFX and Sapphire is the warranty, XFX is lifetime and Sapphire is only 2 years.

Sorry. But apparently I wasn't paying too much attention when I clicked the links. I thought all of the video card were HD 6670s.

The HD 6670 is a mainstream video card that is generally good for the average person who does not demand much performance or doesn't want to spend too much money.

The HD 6770 would an "entry level" card for someone who want video card to play games with the eye candy turned up a bit.

while i agree that the 56/6670 isnt a top tier card its enough to EASILY max out sims, fall out, etc (not crysis or gta iv) but still, i max out the sims and still multi task the heck outta it without going below 60FPS at 1920 x 1080 :)

and yes i am seriously kicking myself for not spending the extra on a 57/6770 :D

For someone majoring in 3D Design and Animation, the extra money on the GPU is easily worth it - go with the 6770. Rendering homework will be much easier :)
