I have just replaced a bad motherboard with the same board in an hp pravilion p6653 desktop which is running an oem windows 7 version. It recognizes the motherboard as new hardware and begins startup however fails and starts boot up again. I know I will probably have to contact microsoft and get a new startup key to reactive the windows with the new board. I do not want to reinstall and lose all my current data, could not back up before due to new board. Where do I get this new number and how do I set it up

oems are usually tied to the original motherboard they are purchased with. its what seperates oem copies to retail copies when it comes to price.

I have just replaced a bad motherboard with the same board < OEM is fine as long as it's the same or equal board.

Best bet is a fresh install , then use the automated phone activation method.
