i'm torn between 2..... The radeon 6950 or the geforce 560 ti......the radeon seems a better card on the specs side but 1 thing i noticed is the difference in shader clock speed, the geforces seem to win in this area,,,what difference does this aspect make and what really determines a good card? also the radeons ive heard seem to run hotter

a simple google will do for that, but there is one thing that isn't mentioned or is overlooked by alot of people;

HD 6950=GTX560Ti performance wise (chart)

GTX560Ti ---> Physx (capable fo calculating it)
HD 6950 ---> they are yet to incorporate this feature into their chips

HD6950 price<GTX560Ti

the radeon 6xxx run far,far ,far cooler than any Nvidia released to date. The only dif in the nvida camp is they run cooler than their predecessors.

* accoding to tom's chart - if you're getting a GPU upgrade than you should look at a card at least 3 tiers higher or else you get near similar performance making the purchase futile - i can see you already have a 9800GTX+...so you seem to be good :)

what do you mean by the geforce winning the shader clock speed? btw you can't compare radeon and geforce cards based on their clock speed because the two was made on different architecture.

performance wise 6950 is slightly faster than GTX560 Ti but i believe often the difference in performance between the two should be hard to be noticeable unless the game was heavily favoring one architecture over the other.

about the temperature thing you can look here:

the gtx 560 ti is better in my opinion if you look at the benchmarks
http://h7.abload.de/img/crysis_2_dx11_gpus_108hu6q.png
plus if you go Nvidia you will get physX plus nvidia cards are more supported in big games like crysis and BF3
also the official recommended system requirement for BF3 are gtx 560 or HD 6950
that mean the 6950 will perform as gtx 560 .. so the gtx 560 Ti is will perform better than HD 6950 !!
also the gtx 560 ti is way much overclocking friendly than the HD 6950
when buy .. buy a pre-overclocked card with 2 fans !! like the this one :

i hope this helped you choosing :)

AMD have a better price/performance.

It's difficult to make a decision based on specs such as core clocks.

Personally, I favor the 560.

Personally, I have found NVIDIA driver support to be more "complete" than AMD monthly releases.

If you are on a budget, go AMD.

At the end of the day, I can't see you regretting either. Both are SOLID cards.
