Hello,
i just got a asus x79 board ....what would give more performance a 4 core i7 2011 socket or a xeon prossesor for the money ?

Xeon cpus may require ecc ram, which costs more. I would go with the regular 2011, unless you find a used xeon for a big discount.

yea thanks for the heads up on that ..what is the diff between ecc and non ecc

ecc is error correcting for server boards. Non-ecc is for desktop motherboards.

Maybe not. It's more expensive and slower. No advantage there. If you have some, try selling it first. Desktop is much cheaper. I got 8 gb of ddr3 for only $23 after rebate.
