I'm looking to start ripping some DVDs to MP4. What all software is out there and where can I get it? Also what's the deal on the copy protection issues I keep hearing about that prevent the movie from being copied to the hard drive
I'd like some info on:
--Price (any free ones?)
--Performance
--Which OS's are supported
--Your experiences with the software packages

Thanks!

I know how to do it, the software is free. Right now I don't have time to explain... just wait.

It's a "backup", you copy the movie onto the hd or a cd just in case your dog eats your original dvd.

Oh yea, a backup. Just in case blockbuster burns down, they'll have someone to retrieve all their videos from. :)

As far as I know it's like the music thing. It's only illegal if you sell the copies and maybe if you post them on some Napster-like thing. I'll be safe as long as I don't let my roommates know about it.

There's lots of software out there. If you're just looking to pull the DVD into a VCD, try searching for DeCSS. That should get you going in the right direction, as you can convert VCD's into mpeg quite easily.

I tought DeCSS was only for LINUX?
Look at the article here on Tom's site,
"MPEG-4 - Copying a DVD Video to CD-ROM"

I am just going to give you a link and a brief summary.

I learnt to rip dvd's this christmas at my cousins computer, he found this link, but I was the one who actually converted the dvds to divx - and spent many hours trying things, and it worked for me, guide yourself using the summary and when you have any doubt use the link for detailed info.

here's the link:

<A HREF="http://www.mydivx.com/howtos/ht_final/" target="_new">http://www.mydivx.com/howtos/ht_final/</A>

And the summary:

-you install the divx and radium codecs
-restart
-you install smartripper and rip the dvd to the hard disk, in some huge files
-you install flaskmpeg, select some options (prior to setting the bitrate, use some software around there that estimates size file for a certain bitrate), crop the screen size (important), and spend a lot of time watching the computer do its job
-now you will have a soundless divx avi, and a .ac3 file
-you must use ac3dec to change the sound from ac3 to mp3
-then with virtualdub you join and synchronize the soundless avi and the mp3 file
-done!

Nope, it has support for 95/98/nt/2k. It was originally *developed* (supposedly) for DVD player support for Linux, although it wasn't until very recently that the Linux community has begun seeing the first signs of DVD players.

check out decss.com for details and other apps.

Yeah, that's the idea I got from my research, Linux only. That's why I came here for help. Thanks, guys.

Hi Juanmi,
I've tried to find the Radium Codecs on the site you mentioned but in vain, do they have another name perhaps?
All the other files, no problems, just that codec
Thanks in advance
Roger

I think they don't have any other name.

The Radium MP3 codec is a version of the fraunhoffer iis mp3 codec. The F IIS codec allows you to play any mp3 bitrate but encode in low quality. The Radium codec allows you to encode in high quality as well.

You should be able to download it at:

<A HREF="http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/encoding.html" target="_new">http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/encoding.html</A>

there you can also find divx bitrate calculators.

Here is the direct link to the file:
