1066 RAM Still Worth It?

As title suggests, is 1066 MHz still worth it in this day and age?

A bit of background...

I have this motherboard and 3Gb of DDR3 RAM, and I'd like to put more RAM in it. While I realize that the MoBo supports up to 1066 MHz at the top end, I'm wondering if I should just buy 8 Gb of 1066 and use that. Or do you guys think it's better to just upgrade the MoBo and get faster RAM?

However it's worth noting that I'm a little broke and as I've been looking, it's a little bit of an investment getting a new MoBo. I'd likely have to get a new CPU as well seeing as I have a Core i7 920, and if I'm reading articles right, that socket's a little old? (correct me if I'm wrong).

So basically, is 1066 still worth it, or should I save up and get a new MoBo and better RAM?

Thanks.

Not just 1066 RAM, but DDR3 in general will soon become obsolete. DDR4 RAM is just around the corner. If performance is very important to you, I would save up. If not, 8gb of 1066 should be fine.

DDR4 is not just around the corner... I think it will be another year or so before it comes into consumer platforms...

And 1066 vs 1333Mhz... you wont see a big difference in performance... actually i doubt that you will even notice it... just buy 8 gigs of 1066 RAM in Dual-Channel mode that you will be set for the next years or maybe even more...

Thanks, that clears things up a bit.

I also thought of another question as well. I currently have 3x1Gb memory sticks, if I just buy, say 2x4Gb at the same frequency can I use them in addition to what I have currently. So the final result would be 11 Gb total with 3x1Gb sticks and 2x4Gb sticks?

i would not suggest that because if you do that you will not be running dual channel... buy 2x4GB stick and toss the 3GB

DDR3 is almost gone? Well that makes me feel good about getting Haswell :p .
