I suspect a little above the Athlon 64 x2 5200+ but would like a sage like person to try and be a little more accurate.

The CPU I have at the moment is socket 939.
Which CPU (if any) could I upgrade to and what kind of % CPU performance increase could I expect?

I should probably mention that I largely use my PC for gaming and a bullet point spec would be:
2GB RAM
GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB x2 (SLI'ed)

Your stuck - that's the fastest 939 cpu available - same as the 185 Opti but has an unlocked multiplier.

Overclock it.

What Reynod said... end of the road for 939. That said... it's STILL not a bad processor.

Unless you're just a rabid, hard-core gamer I imagine you can make it another 6 months to a year with your rig... but at that point, you'll probably be forced to upgrade.

You probably will have to look at the 2006 charts for a comparison.

As to the FX60, I can overclock mine to 3.1 ghz, but they vary in overclocks between 2.8 and 3.2 ghz. The main thing I'd change on your machine is the graphics cards. A new 8800 GT512 or 8800 GTS 512, or an ATI 3870 if you want, would make a world of difference in gameplay. I can run Crysis on my FX60 machine with the 8800 GTS 640, so I think your 939 should be able to run well for another year.

2 gb ram is plenty for a 32 bit OS and easier to OC... the video card upgrade may be a good option. I have mine at 3.0 ghz with an OC'd 8800 GTS 640 and it is more than competitive at present. Benchmarks at A64 x2 6000+ levels. 3dmarks06 at 10,083. Make sure you have a good aftermarket cooler because the FX60 is a space heater!

Yep, as far as processor goes you're pretty much stuck. OC might be an option; I suggest you buy a better cooler though... something like a Zalman 9700 or Scythe Ninja.

You could also sell off your 7800GTX cards... they should sell for atleast $100 each and use the money towards an HD 3870 or 8800GT 512MB.

Yes. Those 7800 GTXs were great in their day, but that day is in the past. Be sure to look for a 8800GT 512 or GTS 512, though. The older 8800s weren't quite as good as the new ones.

I don't understand why some predict a time period of how long a processor will still be capable, just upgrade when it can no longer keep up with the demands asked of it (when ever that may be).
