All right, this may come as a shock to some, but I'll come right out and confess. I’m building a computer for the first time and can't decide which parts to buy. Yes it's unheard of, I know.

For months I surfed the seas of parts, chipsets, and unfortunate floods that raise HDD prices. It’s too much! Save me, I'm going to drown.

Forgive me for the amount of questions I have. If you can answer just one or two, I'd dance around my room in my underwear.

I’m a college student and like gaming, but I primarily intend to use this rig to edit with Premiere. So, I believe I’ll want Hyper-threading and NVIDIA CUDA technology. It needs to be very reliable and stable enough to withstand long editing sessions. I understand that means expensive parts and the ability to cool all my components very well so they can last longer (especially if I figure out the magic of overclocking).

So, is a 570 the most cost efficient way to utilize CUDA, and what’s a good 570 card built for long periods of use?

I’m taking a shot in the dark on PSUs. From what I’ve learned online, they need strong constant amperage coming from a single 12v rail to keep everything going, or something like that. I like the idea of having the option to SLI or Crossfire later.

Some might ask, "But you’re going to be editing there guy, why don’t you invest in a RAID?" Well that’s because I don’t understand them yet, and with HDD prices going up I don’t know if I can afford it. I’ve heard the Spinpoint is the most cost effective one as of now. I guess it’s my best (only) choice right now; seeing how the fabled WD Black Caviar that was $90 five months ago is now a whopping $250.

I know I’ll need lots of space to edit HD footage. I also know solid states are amazing and getting cheaper, but I also hear they have limited writes available or something. With HD footage, I’ll be moving, deleting, and writing copious amounts of bytes, but I still feel like I should get one.

For Cases, I don’t even know how to figure out what to get. I know I need to keep everything cool, I want USB 3.0, I’d like Firewire for cameras, enough bays for maybe 3 DVD/BD burners and a media card reader, and expansion slots to potentially hold SLI. The 500R would let me use the H100 liquid cooler, and the IN WIN I just picked for its price and front firewire. I’m very open to suggestions.

Apparently the 212 is a p**p cooler for its price, and I don’t really know anything about liquid cooling. However, keeping things cool for long sessions of editing is important. I’m guessing that means I’ll need a very efficient case an cooler. Are there ways to cool of the GPU as well?

A cooler 570 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121432 and at same price. Asus are solid build video card.
If you want a very good and quiet cooler ill recomand you http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121432
Power supply ... ill recomend you this Seasonic 1000W will be enough and is cheaper http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151110
The parts what you have choosed are ok. I can tell you a lot about the case because evryboby have its own taste. Good luck with your monster :)

Thanks for your input!

Do you know if that particular GPU you picked will have any problems fitting on the motherboard I picked out? Like if it will block any important stuff on the board, and do you think it'd be alright to SLI that card later with my MOBO. They're both ASUS so it seems like none of that should be a problem, although that is quite large card there.

Do you think I would be able to get away with that Corsair AX 850W PSU? Even if I did SLI.

HDDs are too expensive for me right now. I will need one, but I probably won't need it for a while, so I'm gonna wait.
It's kind of the same story with the GPU. I hear the next line-up should be rolling out by April, so current GPU prices should drop a bit, right? No guarantees I guess, but I still think I'm gonna hold off on that for a bit too.

I am a little worried about the H80 and H100, though. I've read some reviews about a common problem people are having with receiving faulty pumps right now. Anyone know about that? If I do get one and it works out fine, should it be the H80 or the H100?

And as for the power supply, I know that the 850W will be plenty for what I have now, but I plan on getting one for what I'm going to eventually end up with.
In the future it's possible that I end up with something like-

1 overclocked 2600K

2 overclocked 570s

32G RAM

1 DVDRW, 1 BR reader, 1 BR writer, 1 media card reader

1 or 2 SSD, 1 or 2 HDD (maybe with two drives in Raid 0)

3 120mm fans, 1 200mm fan, and one H80 cooler with 2 120mm fans

-- will the HX 850 have enough amperage and Watts to handle all of that, or will I need the 1050?
