Hi everyone, I just recently put together a new machine in anticipation of BF3. Now when i play i have a choppy gameplay with fps readings between 15-20. If i start the campaign my fps starts around 30 but eventually drops to 15. This is so frustrating! My components are as follows:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
SAPPHIRE 100314-3L Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16
Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb

I'm pretty new to computer building and repair but I feel like I put a decent machine together. Anyone have any guess on how to get my fps up to a playable level? I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks

still doesn't explain why he is droping down to 15 20 fps, a 6870 still gives decent gameplay at high 1080. hell my 5770 does. but anyway, what is your res and what sitting do you have it on.

Wow, thanks everyone for the quick responses. I have my bf3 settings on med. I hVe no idea what to set the resolution to, but I did start switching it around and have had some mild success. Fps is is now between 20-30 so thats better. What would you suggest for my resolution? I am playing on my led tv, not sure if that matters. Ill check on mobo driver updates now. Thanks again everyone.

ecm1981, I suggest this:
Your rig is powerful enough to play the game at the res you want, maybe just not on Ultra. Because frame rates in games are somewhat hard to troubleshoot, one thing that is easy is to pick a benchmark that has very standard results, and test to see if you are scoring what you should in the benchmark. I use 3dmark to determine if I'm getting within +/-10% of what others with a similar rig are getting. If I am, then I can look at the settings in game and see if I can massage it to run better.

Have you tried turning off all the AA, I found that the defered AA hit my performance hardest out of all the settings available the next worst was terrain mesh and terrain decoration or what ever they call it. The textures made no difference in regard to performance when I changed from low to ultra same with no SSAO/HBAO, when it was off vs HBAO made no difference interms of performance.

And to be honest the post AA didn't make any difference to me because I didn't have the deferred AA on.

whats with 60 fps max.? just like steam. running ultra settings 1920x1080 smoothly but evga precision flat lines at 60fps @ only 40-50% gpu max.

QX9650Extreme/780i/8gRAM/EVGA GTX580oc edition – Vista basic 64-bit (all MS updated +Nvidia bf3 driver)

long for the old days of installshield and mod tools :fou:

Have you installed Catalyst Beta drivers for Battlefield 3? Battlefield 3 has its own drivers for its poor performance sake. I have a 6850 and BF3 Beta was playing at a 35-40 Constant at 720p. I diagnose drivers, there is nothing here about the drivers that are the problem.

hey guys

I have a question regarding bf3.

My computer:
i7 870 2.93ghz
asus 775pro mobo
4gb ram
radeon 6850 crossfire with 11.9 drivers and cap 4 for bf3

the problem is that when i turn on fraps before playing the game i get like below 50fps, but when i turn fraps on during the game i get like 65-120fps. but that has to be too much.

I play the game at 1920x1080 with high or ultra ( it makes no difference in performance ), with aa16 ( also makes no differnece if set to 1 ). This are the auto settings.

Yes I know that there is a problem, but I can't figure it out.

My CPU runs at about 55C tops ( I have thermaltake jing ) and my graphic cards also don't go past 70C. But I don't understand why the giant leap in fps if I turn fraps on during the game. It makes no sense. Could it just be ATI's fault with crappy drivers?

I also have like only 65-90 fps in bad company 2. I play on 1920x1080 and everything highest except aa and msaa. But I think that I should be getting better fps. But that doesn't bother me because it playable, but bf3, well, who knows. And I don't want to lower my res. Cause I tried it and it just sucks

I have reinstalled graphics drivers. I went to old ones and it was the same. So now I went to the new ones and nothing changed. I dont experience any microstattering or screen tearing nor any graphic anomalyies. I simply can't figure out the reason. Can somebody tell me how many fps they are getting if they have a similar rig?

Sorry Vulo, my first response was for the original poster. I just seen you posted something different.

4GB of Ram might be on the lower side? Most rigs are running 8GB..

The second poster on this thread saying he's getting around 40fps @ 1080p...

The second AA setting in the game really pounds on your performance. I have the same cards (2x6850) and the game runs over 60 fps in 1200p with all settings at max EXCEPT AA. When I turn it on it dips under 60, likely 50-60 fps range (srry no FRAPS, but I have a keen eye). My drivers are from Oct 08. 11.9. I have 16gb ram, but I tried on 8 and it was the same. I have an 2600k at 4.6ghz.
