Monitor Flashes off and on

Just over the last couple of days when I turn on my monitor (cold) the screen flashes on and off and you can hear a laser sounding noise from inside a few times. It will do this for a few minutes until the monitor warms up (I guess?). It's never done this before and I haven't changed any settings recently.
Viewsonic GF775 17" Monitor (just over 1 year old)
Asus AGPV3800 TNT2 Video board
Res. is set at 1024 X 768 with large fonts. It's a little better if I change this to a lower setting it's fine. But I don't want 800 X 600 (sucks, maybe when I'm 80 and half blind)
Is this problem the monitor of the Video card?

If you haven't changed any settings, and it happens when it is cold only, it sounds to me that you've already narrowed down the problem to the monitor itself.

Have you fired off an email to Viewsonic? I am thinking of getting a flat panel monitor, and just emailed their support mail for info yesterday and was pleased to get a well-written reply from them within 24 hours.
