i find it hard when trying to compare Nvidia to Radeon cards. my question is: Which ATI cards are on par with a) Geforce 8800 GTX and 2) 9800 GTX/GTX+

An 8800GTX and a 9800GTX are the same card the 9800 GTX+ is the same as a GTS 250 which is on par with a 4770, 4850, 5750, and 6750.

Well, I hate to tell you this, but at 1280x1024, your current card ( 9800GTX+ ) is more than enough to play most of games with high setting on that resolution...
I think unless you want to go with bigger monitor then there's no need to upgrade your card... ;)
