Would it be possible to plug another computer into the network connection you are using?
If that comp works fine there is a chance your nic is broken. If it does not link up at all (light comes on) but another comp does that thing is probably dead. You can check and see if it is a software problem fairly quickly if you get a linux live cd. Just pop in Knoppix or one of the other ones and if you get a network connection on it you nic is fine.

There is no way to replace an onboard nic w/o replacing the entire motherboard. If you have a free pci slot just get a pci network card and use that.

ping localhost or ping 127.0.0.1

If it doesn't reply, your NIC is probably not installed or dead.

Make sure you have your drivers installed.

If you plug it into a network and you don't get a light on the NIC (and you have a hub/switch/router on the other end of that ethernet cable) it'll probably be dead.

Try another NIC if you can. If that works, your onboard one is dead.

Check to see if your Onboard NIC is disabled in BIOS.
