First build problem: System for Surfing/TV/Light Gaming not Booting

Hi all,

I was hoping to build my first system without needing to ask for help after researching here and elsewhere (I thought it'd be a cool accomplishment), but it's just not going to happen. Hopefully someone here will be able to point me in the right direction!

After I put everything together and hooked up all of the cables, my system will turn on, the case and CPU fans will start up, the peripherals (CD drive, Memory card reader) all show that they have power, but the computer will not display an image on the monitor it's hooked up to. (Build info follows)

What I've tried:

- Different monitors/cables
- Trying to hook monitor up to onboard graphics as well as graphics card
- Unplugging one or more drives to see if it'd boot without them
- Unseating/reseating RAM
- Made sure processor was producing heat (and guessing that means it's working)
- Resetting CMOS jumper
- Removing motherboard battery for ~10 minutes
- The other steps on the TRY THIS FIRST sticky except for buying a speaker (doing this ASAP) and testing the PSU (because it seems to turn on and work, and I don't have enough faith in my electrical expertise to do this yet)

  1. Shameless/desperate bump :(
  2. Try moving the memory to the other two slots. ...or use a single module and move it around to see the results. It sounds like the typical "no memory" situation where the system will power up, but not post. Hopefully you can figure it out. Those are the PITA issues...
  3. Thanks! Do you know if there's a way to check the version of the BIOS my mobo is running? I just noticed I forgot to list it in my specs (editing ASAP), but it's a Biostar A880GU3; the Biostar website says it's compatible with my processor series, but I don't know if they can/would refer to a specific version of the BIOS?

..not without being able to boot. Regardless of the BIOS revision, your 970 CPU should be supported and be able to boot just fine out-of-the-box.
  5. Agree with sadams04 - Looking at the descriptions for the two BIOS updates for that board, neither states anything about additional CPU support. The CPU support list clearly states the X4-970 is supported.

  6. Have you tried out the monitor on anything else to see if it works?
