Hello,
I'm in the process of building my first rig and I can't figure out If the type of memory of the Motherboard and RAM(DDR3), should be the same for the graphics card.Does the memory type matter for the graphics card? Could I put a ddr5 type graphics card in and not have a problem?

Video card memory type and main RAM memory type are mutually exclusive as far as compatibility goes. You can mix and match them without problems. Just make sure the interface is compatible (that is, don't mix up a PCI slot with a PCI-express x16 slot. Those who focus on gaming almost always have DDR3 RAM with a GDDR5 video card and there's no problems. Do beware the 4 GB RAM limitation of 32-bit operating systems.

Graphics card memory is something which you DON'T buy and install separately.

It comes with the card, generally DDR5 type.

You will have no issues.

Motherboard RAM is something you need to buy and install, typically DDR3 type.

What motherboard are you running?

The type and amount will depend on this.

agree with @ ulillillia ram memory has no relation with video memory if you can use ddr3 you also can put gddr5 video card so don't worry this is not be a problem.

I'm planning on running a ASUS P8P67 LE B3 Intel P67 Motherboard - ATX, Socket H2 (LGA 1155), Intel P67 Express, 2200MHz DDR3 (O.C.), Gigabit LAN, 8-Channel Audio, SATA 6.0 Gb/s, SuperSpeed USB 3.0, AMD CrossFireX Support. Running i5 2500k cpu with a XFX 650w PSU.
I'm building this rig with being able to run Skyrim smoothly in mind.
Not sure whether to slap a EVGA Gtx 460/550i(1gb) or a XFX Radeon HD 6850 (1gb) both GDDR5.
I'm not for or against either cards, just want your opinions.

i would say yes, you can play skyrim very smoother with 6850..or either gtx460

For RAM, go for G Skill RipJaws XL CL9 12800 DDR3 2x4Gb (2x2Gb) if you are running 32bit OS.

As for GPU, either GTX460 or HD6850. Both will perform the same. EVGA have excellent RMA. Not sure about XFX tho.

I'm partial to NVIDIA, so....it's up to you. lol
