I currently have a E6600 and I am looking to upgrade to a Q6600. I know I am gaining two more cores, but other then that what kind of performance gains can I expect from this upgrade. I am a gamer and I do alot of multitasking on my PC, like photo editing, video editing and building webpages etc....

Well in general use you won't see alot of increase in performance. but video editing and encoding, extreme high-res photo editing and extreme high end games (like crysis and i think to a lesser extent bioshock/supreme commander) you'll see enough of an increase to warrent it.

The only question is do you do enough of these things to warrent the cost?

I am usually on my PC doing one or more of these things for 5-6 hours every night. I think it will pay for itself in a few weeks.lol

I can give you a direct comparison... i own both Q6600 and E6600. Games there is actually no difference i have noticed . However, the dvd encoding and decoding is heaps better on the quad. If you dont multitask at all or very little (as would be the case for heavy gaming) I would grab a Thermalright 120 Ultra and OC the e6600 will be better option for you

The term "gaming" is very broad and subjective, so it makes a great deal of difference as to which "games" are referenced. My computer exists for Flight Sumulator X. Flight simulators are by nature the most heavily CPU bound "games" available. I ran a frame rate comparison at 3.6 Ghz when I upgraded from my E6600 to a Q6600, and the FPS increased by an astonishing 80%, since Flight Simulator X became MultiCore threaded with FSX-SP1.

If you review Tom's VGA Charts - http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=706&model2=713&chart=291 - it's easy to see that Flight Simulator X is not very impressed by high end graphics cards, however, it does run notably better on nVidia cards than it does on ATI cards. It's interesting to note that in Flight Simulator X, the difference between a 7800GTX and an 8800GTX is less than 2 FPS at any resolution.

Yes the quad core may not be better on games right now, but you also have to consider if you're going to be gaming in the future, because soon games will be optimized better for quad I think.
