Component swapping advice

Hello,

I will be building my next computer, and I need help trying to figure out how to swap components from my current system. That will determine what type of new parts I'll buy.

I currently own an HP Pavillion Elite Media Center m9040n. It comes with an HP remote for Windows Media Center. I think the remote sensor is part of the card reader component. the system also is wifi accessible?

So, how can I transfer these 2 feature to my new set up?

As you can tell, I'm probably taking on a project that's a little advance for me, but I'll enjoy the learning process as I go along .

It will probably transfer, but are you planing on getting a new motherboard, hdd or case? If you get a new case it probably wont have a place for the remote reciever although most htpc cases do. And if you take it out pay attention to how it plugs into the motherboard.

To answer your questions.

I am planning on getting a new mother board for the i5 processor. I will also be getting a new case. I think it should have a place for the card reader as it in a regular dvd player bay. (i think that's 5.5 in). So basically copy the way it was hooked up in the current computer and try to do the same with the new one. That's what i was planning on, and you confirmed my thought process.

How about the wifi? is that a card or a plug in i could transer?

Yes if its built into a 5.25'' bay then it'll will transfer to any case, I was thinking about some store bought pc's have little card readers that dont transfer very well. The trickiest thing about swapping really is plugging in the power button, HDD activity light, reset button, and speaker wires into the motherboard, just read your case instructions (it will tell you what the wires are) and your motherboard instructions (it will tell you where to plug in the wires from the case).

Also sometimes you may have to re-install windows, usually if you swap out the motherboard windows will no longer boot, and I dont think your key will work either. may have to buy a new windows also.

Regarding the wireless adapter I assume your refering to a PCI wireless adapter that plugs directly into your motherboard. It will work with any motherboard you get, you'll just have to install the drivers from the cd it came with or have a wired internet connection until you can download from the manufacturers website.
