I've just got a new Motorola V525 which is unable to send text messages,
showing all the signs of an incorrect message centre number. The problem is
that the 525 doesn't have a menu option to change the number. Vodafone and
Singlepoint are both stumped on this one, though they do seem to have
genuinely tried to help. I've so far been unable to contact Motorola, but I
don't have much hope for them in any case.
As suggested by one Vodafone agent I've tried putting the sim in another
(Motorola) phone to edit the number. It was blank until I put in the
(right) number, but that didn't make any difference when it went back in
the 525. A different Vodafone agent said that the phone has its own record
of the number which overrides the sim card one, but I think he may have
been bluffing.
Does anyone know how to change the message centre number on a V525, or have
another suggestion as to the cause of the problem?

Today I succeeded in getting through to Motorola, who seemed very sure that
the problem was the sim card. Apparently I need a "high voltage" one in
order to send text messages from a V525. I've never heard of such a thing,
and neither have Singlepoint, though they've promised to send me another
sim in the post just in case.
Does anybody here know anything about "high voltage" sims, or are Motorola
making it up?

All Sims since 1997 are 3 volt, some before that were 5 volt and won't work
on some recent phones.
Is your Sim that old?

All Vodafone SIM cards support 5V handsets and most (since around 2000)
support 3Volt handsets
However the new SIM card you are being set should have the SMSC address
correct. How did you change it in the first place?

If it won't do what it is meant to and the Vodafone shop can't sort it
out, demand a replacement.

There are different SIM voltages, but that is of no relevance to your
issue. I would try the SIM in another handset, alter the SMSC number and
then put it back.

No, it came with the phone. As I said, this whole "sim voltage" thing seemed
pretty unlikely to me in the first place - sounds like Motorola were making
it up, then.

If necessary I will do, but I'd rather get this one working. In any case, I
can't get to the shop before Saturday, so I'm trying everything I can do by
phone first.

I've done that, on the suggestion of one of the Vodafone agents. It didn't
make any difference. According to Motorola (who must now be taken with a
truckload of salt, it seems) the number is fixed in the firmware that
Vodafone set up and then image onto every 525 they supply. Thus it cannot
be viewed or altered, but also cannot be wrong. The sim card is ignored.

That's what I was hoping, as long as the phone will read it.
> How did you change it in the first place?
I didn't. It hasn't worked since I got the phone. I assumed it was the
message centre number because I had exactly the same problem with my
previous phone - came with no service centre number - except that that one
had a menu item to change it.
