Access shared drives through the internet?

So, I've been sharing/mapping my hard drives over my home network and I'm thinking about kicking it up a notch and getting access to them from the internet.

I'm not too keen on how to go about this. VPN, FTP, etc. are all relatively new to me.

All I know is this:
1. I want it secure.
2. I want it free.
3. I want it simple.

Can anyone point me in a good direction?
